CD-ROM was introduced in 1980 for stereo buffs, the
extraordinarily successful CD or compact disc, is an optical laser disc
designed to enhance the reproduction of recorded music and the history of
CD-ROM begins with the announcement about it in October 1983.
Initially,
it was created just a drive to find an efficient means of storing still or
moving images on disc. This project instantly was known as videodisc
experiments. In early 1960’s, Telefunken and Decca had some success with short
recordings using vinyl disc and spiral grooves. As anticipated, the high speed
of rotation required, led to rapid wear of both disc and stylus. Here the disc
surface and stylus were used to represent the plates of a capacitor whose
charge varied as the stylus passed over grooves on the disc.
In 1972, at
Eindhoven, Philips demonstrated a reflective light system which was to mark the
birth of practical optical discs. This led to the commercial launch of Laser
Version in 1978(US) and 1982(Europe). Laser Version was originally intended as
a consumer product for playing films or videos. In terms of technology, Laser
Version can be considered, as the rather large CC-ROM drive was data is stored.
